Dental Implants by St. Paul Dentists

What Are Dental Implants?

If you’ve ever lost a permanent tooth, there’s a good chance you were provided a dental implant for your replacement tooth. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry says, “Dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth. They allow you to live the way you want to – confidently eating, smiling, laughing, talking, kissing and enjoying all of your everyday activities without worrying about your teeth.” A dental implant is a metal post that is surgically implanted into the jawbone or skull beneath the gums. Once they have been positioned, a dentist can properly and securely mount a replacement tooth. These implants are used not only for individual teeth but can also be used in conjunction with dentures, crowns, bridges, and other cosmetic dentistry purposes such as porcelain veneers. There are several types of dental implants. Each offering different benefits based on an individual’s needs.

Types of Dental Implants

There are two dental implant procedures considered safe by the American Dental Association. They are: endosteal and subperiosteal implants.

Once the area around the implant has healed, the prosthetic tooth is attached to the implant. Patients should expect upwards of 6 weeks for full recovery. This allows time for the bone to grow around the implant and for the body to accept the implant as a permanent fixture. Patients are advised to follow up with their dentists so as to ensure healthy healing.

For patients who don’t have enough natural bone height to accommodate endosteal implants, the alternative is a subperiosteal implant. These are metal frames that are placed on the bone rather than inside of it. They are attached below the tissues of the gum. This is a procedure in which the aforementioned frames project through the gums and the prosthetic tooth or teeth are affixed. The expectation is for the gum to heal around the frame, allowing it to become completely attached to the jawbone.

What Are the Benefits of Implants

Improved Self-Confidence

It’s a known fact that when you look better, you feel better. Why not let your smile reflect that? Whether that means getting porcelain veneers to enhance your smile or having dental implants done to replace a missing tooth. Implants can be a great way to boost your self-confidence.

Tailored for Every Patient

Every patient is different, and dental implants are customized to fit perfectly based on each individual’s needs. Unlike bridges, implants do not need to be anchored to other teeth. This means the rest of your teeth don’t have to be impacted by the procedure.
